Choose one that fits comfortably
and is made of breathable material.

During this time, we all know the importance of wearing a mask because it helps slow down the spread of diseases and viruses.

However, you might also be experiencing some irritation around the areas where you wear the mask. For many of us, we are experiencing dryness, irritation or even breakouts. But what is the solution since we do need to wear a mask?

Here are some quick tips and a DIY mask that can help avoid some of these skin triggers.

Choose the right mask:
There are plenty of creative and fun options when it comes to masks. Make sure you choose one that fits comfortably and is made of breathable material. Not all fabrics are created equal, and polyester can sometimes trap sweat, cause irritation and trigger acne. Fabric can make a big difference, especially if you’re prone to breakouts. Look for masks made of cotton because they can help absorb sweat and allow the skin to breathe. Do not reuse your mask, that will help stop the spread of germs and bacteria. Alternate and wash your mask regularly as this will alleviate acne breakouts and skin flare-ups throughout the day.

Prepare your skin before putting on your mask:
Just like you prepare your body before putting on your clothes by moisturizing it, before putting your mask on, you should also use a face moisturizer with hydrating properties. Look for ingredients like chamomile and Aloe vera, which are known for their soothing hydrating properties. Hydration can help prevent irritation. Try and avoid thick and greasy makeup as it can clog pores. If you wear makeup, look for mineral-based makeup and ingredients like titanium dioxide, which absorbs oil on the skin.

Treat your skin after wearing a mask:
After a long day of wearing a mask, be sure to pamper your skin with sulfate-free and hydrating products. Sulfates are strong detergents that alter the lipid structure of the upper epidermis and are irritating. After removing your mask, make sure to wash your face with a mild cleanser with moisturizing cleansing ingredients, which will help remove dirt and oil from your skin. Avoid using hot water because it can irritate and dehydrate your skin. Use lukewarm water as the skin is already sensitive, and this will help prevent further irritation. Finish the process by applying a moisturizer with antioxidants and essential oils, which can restore and sooth your skin.

If you experience excessive dryness, irritation or itchiness, you can also make a hydrating mask.

You will need three simple ingredients:
• 3 tablespoons of oatmeal
• 2 tablespoons of Herbal Aloe Soothing Gel
• 1 tablespoon of honey

Instructions: Cook the oatmeal with 2 tablespoons of water for 20 to 30 seconds. Take out from microwave and add 2 tablespoons of Herbal Aloe Soothing Gel and 1 tablespoon of honey to the hot oatmeal. Allow the oatmeal to cool and then apply to the face, preferably with a face brush. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Oatmeal and honey are known for their hydrating properties, and Herbal Aloe Soothing Gel has skin conditioning ingredients.

To finish, wash thoroughly using warm water and a gentle sulfate-free cleanser.

Although it can be a bit inconvenient to wear a mask, we cannot emphasize enough how important it is to your health and the health of others. And if you are currently seeing skin irritation, remember that it is only temporary and that you can apply these simple tips that can make a difference. Also, don’t forget that the products you use on your face and body can also make a noticeable difference in the way your skin looks and feels. So choose gentle products that can deliver results through their ingredients.
